Where the forest meets the sea

This week in our English work we have read a new story which links to our theme work on rainforests. This story is a recount about a boy and his father who travelled by boat to the Daintree rainforest in Australia. We listened to the story and thought about how we could add more detail to expand the sentences using the pictures to help us.
“I live in a little white cottage by the sea. It is always warm and the sun glistens on the calm sea. My father and I love to go on adventures. We travel on our old boat called the Time Machine and explore the reef. We find beautiful coloured coral and there are hundreds of fish. One day we go to a place we can only reach by boat…”
In our geography lessons this week we have been learning about the layers of the rainforest and the different features of each one.
“The forest floor is very damp and dark. Lots of insects and anteaters live there.”
“The understory has little bits of light. Jaguars, lizards and snakes are some of the animals that live here.”
"The canopy is near the top of the rainforest. It has lots of light and colour. Birds, monkeys and sloths are some of the animals that live there.”
“The emergent layer is the top. This is where the tallest trees in the rainforest reach high. Birds and butterflies live in this layer.”
