Class 3- Trip to Fountains Abbey

12 May 2022

As part of our theme work this half term looking at the big question 'What would it have been like to live at Fountains Abbey?' the children went on a trip to Fountains Abbey. They behaved brilliantly and were super representatives of our school.

We dressed up like monks and reminded ourselves about the haircuts they would have had and what they would have worn. At sevral points during the day we tried to follow the rule of silence like the monks would have done, this was a very  tricky task.

We had a tour around the abbey, this allowed us to get a much more realistic impression of what life would have been like when Fountains Abbey was built and was a fully functioning monastrey. Whilst in the abbey we talked about what the different rooms would have been used for. There was the opportunity to look at what they ate, how they made money, what bloodletting was and what jobs the monks did.

Where they went to the monk's latrines, for some reason this particularly fascinated lots of the children!

We were given a resource bag full of different objects which allowed us to get hands on with some of the artefacts from the time.

We began to learn about what happened to the abbey under Henry the 8th, we will continue this learning in the coming weeks in school.

We sketched pictures of the abbey and will colour these with watercolours at a later date.

We finished the day with a quiz and there was a small prize for the winning team.

Have a lovely weekend.
