Striking and Field Festival, Timelines and Maths

18 Apr 2024

On Tuesday, we spent the morning competing in a Striking and Fielding festival at Outwood School. We enjoyed taking part in the competition and it was good to meet up with friends from other Ripon schools.
The game we played was called Ro-icket, which is similar to both rounders and cricket. The young leaders from Outwood School showed us what to do and they kept a record of our scores, during the three rounds. We were able to practise and develop both striking and fielding skills. The event also gave an opportunity to develop social skills; good sportsmanship was encouraged and we were proud of Charlie and Duncan who won awards for positive attitudes and for encouraging other players.

This week, we began our new curriculum focus for this half-term, which is a local history study.  Our big question is ‘What was life like for a monk living in Fountains Abbey during the reign of Henry VIII?’  We began by investigating the timelines of events at Fountains Abbey.  We found that this covers a thousand years and we researched to find out what happened at Fountains Abbey during this time, as well as looking at significant national events.

We’re looking forward to finding out lots more information about the time when monks lived at Fountains Abbey and to investigate what happened to them during the reign of Henry VIII.

In maths, Year 3 have been completing work about length and perimeter.  We have been adding lengths and then calculating the measurement of the perimeter of objects.

Year 4 have begun thinking about fractions.  First, we partitioned mixed numbers and compared and ordered mixed numbers.
Next, we converted mixed numbers to improper fractions and then converted improper fractions to mixed numbers.
