Jubilee Celebration

23 May 2022

We have had the most fantastic week in School embracing this once in a lifetime celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

We have explored many questions and enjoyed lots of wonderful experiences and activities all based around the Jubilee. Please take a look through the slideshows below to see what we have doing.

Who is the Queen?

Our week began exploring the question who is our Queen? We learnt that she was born in 1924 and that she was daughter of King George the 6th. Although it was her Grandfather who was on the throne when she was born. The children also discovered how Elizabeth came to be Queen when her father died in 1952, and how her coronation followed in 1953. To make our learning more active and fun the children had to go on a fact hunt all around the school grounds to gather all this information. They all remembered the facts well and wrote them in their timelines.

What is a Jubilee?
The children then learnt that a jubilee is a celebration

Pupil Voice Jubilee Day

On Tuesday the children enjoyed spending the day in their pupil voice teams. They took part in four workshops with the teachers, With Mrs Mickelfield they enjoyed listening, singing and dancing to music through the decades. I imagine you may have heard some renditions of we will rock you! With Mrs Lewis the children learnt about the Union Jack flag and rose to the challenge of drawing and colouring their own copy!  With Mrs Barker they planned their menu for the party on Friday and wrote invitations. Finally with Miss Wray the children created their decorations in preparation for the Friday festivities . We also enjoyed some committee time and shared reading. A really jam packed fun day!

What different roles does the Queen have?

We learnt all about the different jobs the Queen has. We learnt about her position as the Head of the Armed Forces and the Church of England. We also learnt about her constitutional role where she keeps in close contact with our Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. We were amazed to hear how many royal engagements the Royal family attend during each year to help support their chosen charities. We decided the Queen was certainly a very busy lady!

On Wednesday afternoon, with Miss Rogers we began by looking at the Royal family tree, there were some people who we recognised and others who weren't familiar with, but by using the internet we matched them up to the correct place on the tree. Billy told us that he had met Princess Catherine during the Tour De France and Miss Rogers met the Queen when she was at primary school and the Queen visited Harrogate. There were a few other children who had also had royal encounters.

After that we looked at how the world has changed during the Queen's 70 year reign. In groups we were given a different aspect of life e.g. techonology and we had to research how it had changed since 1952. We put our research onto a timeline.

Plates and Dancing
On Thursday we finished off our work from the day before and we took part in 2 very exciting workshops. First we each painted a Jubilee plate and we got to take them home.

Afternoon Tea

Friday was the day of our big celebration. We did our spellings and times tables tests first thing in the morning. Then we gathered in our colour teams to prepare our food for our afternoon tea. We had great fun preparing the scones and making sandwiches. After lunch we got dressed into our party clothes and once the adults had put out the food and displayed our decorations we had a fantastic afternoon tea.
