Wonderful Writing in Class Three

Wonderful Writing in Class Three

Class three have been working enthusiastically in all their subjects this week. The children have been using fantastic learning behaviours – showing great effort, aspiration and taking responsibility for their learning. But this week we thought we would showcase some of the amazing writing we have been working on over the past few weeks. Since last showing you our instructional writing the children have written descriptions, adventure stories, newspapers and we are currently learning about diary writing.

Before creating longer pieces of writing we go on a writing learning journey to build up all the knowledge and skills that the children will need to be able to be successful in their writing. For example in our adventure stories, we read the picture book – Way back home by Oliver Jeffers. This is such a classic tale of adventuring!  We then shared other adventure stories we knew – such as the books from the Beast Quest series or Famous Five and Harry Potter, also the Firework Makers daughter, The way back home etc. We decided the list was endless! By thinking about these amazing examples, we realised that adventure stories needed great description and great characters who go on journeys or adventures so we needed to practice skills that would help us to write about these.  We first learnt how to use our 5 senses in descriptions and then explored how to expand now phrases to add details and bring characters and settings to life. We also revised how to use conjunctions to help our sentences and stories flow better.

Because of all the practice, our stories were full of adventure, description, and detail. After finishing our first draft we went back to check our stories for the usual errors and to improve parts that maybe didn’t work as well as we wanted them too. The result were some fantastic adventure stories!

We also think a lot about the purpose and audience for our writing – so why we are writing and who we are writing for. By thinking hard about this we make sure that our writing is in the correct style. So, for example in our newspaper articles our audience didn’t know anything about the event, but we were the reporters with all the facts, so we needed to be factual and very clear in giving them all the information they needed about the event.

To be able to write our newspapers we again needed to practice some skills and build our knowledge of how Newspaper articles were set out and how to use quotations in our work.We again finished our first draft then went back with our purple editing pen to make any improvements and changes that we needed to do.

You may have spotted some bees floating around on the children's writing. These Bees are awarded for work that has really impressed us. That might be either because it shows great individual achievement, or a real progression of skills. This work is also presented on our 'work to bee proud of wall' so it is a great achievement in Class 3 to find one of these bees.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing our amazing writing. We do have some very talented writers in our group but we are very proud of each and everyone's progress in their work as everyone is improving with every piece they do. Well done class 3!
