Week one in Class 1

10 Apr 2024

We have made a fantastic start to the new term!

On Wednesday, we began our new topic in History on castles. The children enjoyed sharing their experiences of castles and discussing what a castle is. We decided that a castle is used to defend an area of land but also a home for people who had money and status. The children liked researching castles in the UK, we found some interesting information such as Kent has a castle called Leeds Castle and Devon Castle is thought to be the biggest in the UK.
Once we established what a castle is, we looked at the key features. To support us to do this, we consdiered the similarities and differences by using images of castles. We found the key features to be:
  • a chamber
  • kitchens
  • guard rooms
  • stables
  • towers
  • courtyard
  • gatehouse

In Maths, our year one and two children have started a unit on fractions. We started by looking at what a part and a whole is then considering equal and unequal parts. Fractions have to be equal parts. The children finished the week by looking at halves.

In Reception, we are learning about adding by counting on. We have been playing lots of games such as snakes and ladders and hopscotch to help us.

On Thursday, we had a special visitor! "Cheepy" the chick came into school for the day. The chick was 2 days old and we learnt a little bit about how we would care for the chick: keeping the chick warm, having a shallow bowl of water and some food for them. Some of the children held the chick too, it was very soft! After, we wrote a little bit about the chick and how to care for them.

Nosterfield Nature Reserve contacted school to invite us to visit and also to tell us all about their Draw a Bird Day on the 8th of April. They are inviting children to draw a bird to support them in the celebration of creativity and also to show appreciation for all of the lovely birds in the UK. The children spent time looking at artists who have created work around birds before making their own bird inspired artwork. We hope to visit the exhbition of our work and other schools later in the year.
