Our Trip to Jorvik and Dig

We had a fabulous day out on Monday, thank you for getting the children to school that little bit earlier! We were able to get to York in perfect time to walk to Dig.

At Dig we enjoyed a workshop all about Viking Warfare and Battle tactics. We learnt all about Viking battle techniques and their choice of weapons including, axes, spears, swords, shields and knives. We also found out more about their use of armour including chain mail, helmets and leather padding.

After a quick pre-lunch, we headed back to the JORVIK Viking Centre. We first explored the site of the Coppergate Dig, and we were able to see the actual remains of Viking buildings (including a toilet!) Afterwards we travelled back in time to explore around 10th century York, experiencing what it was like living in the city. The sights, sounds and even the smells of the Viking Age are brought vividly back to life in the museum. Finally, we got up-close with some beautiful and rare Viking artefacts which ranged from delicate earrings and socks to frying pans and padlocks and even a fossilized Viking poo!

The children showed some great knowledge already and I hope learnt a lot from the trip. They really were a pleasure to take to York!
