This week we have spent lots of our lessons focusing on DT. This half term our DT unit is Food Technology.
The week began with learning based around the seasonality of our food. We then looked at where our food comes from, is it grown, reared, caught or processed. It was an opportunity for lots of our children to share their experiences from home on their farms.
We then discussed what we were going to produce this week, pies. The children shared pies that they had eaten and whether they had enjoyed them or not. The children then had to choose whether they were going to make a savoury or sweet pie and then what flavours they were going to include in their product. Once they had done this, they thought about the design of their pies. Would they add decorations? How would they arrange the pastry? Would they egg wash the top?
Next came the cooking techniques, We made dough, measuring, sieving, mixing, rubbing, kneading and rolling. In smaller groups we then began to prepare the fillings for our pies. This allowed the children to peel, chop, slice and dice their ingredients. Once everything was ready, the children assembled their pies ready to take home to cook.
The next day in school, the children evaluated their work.
