Our block subject to begin this half term is Geography, we are looking at the big question 'What happens when the earth moves?'
We began by recapping prior learning; naming and locating the continents and naming and locating the major oceans. The children did really well with this, lots remembered that very catchy song they learnt in KS1 about the continents.
Next we looked at the earth's construction and discussed tectonic plates and fault lines. We found out there were 15 plates and they were loosely named after the continents near them.
We also looked at how mountains were made. We found out about the 3 types of mountains; fold, fault and volcanic. The children used Chromebooks to label some key mountain ranges on the world map. Next we looked at volcanoes, we found famous volcanoes and added them to our map. We learnt about the different layers of the earth and that holes in the earth's crust allowed magma to be released from volcanoes.
Then we looked at earthquakes, we talked about what being in an earthquake would be like and watched footage to help us imagine this. We found out that some countries are more prone to earthquakes than others, these are the ones located along the fault lines. This then led us to think about the impact earthquakes and volcanoes have on the countries which experience them. Surprisingly there were some positive as well as negative impacts.
We researched the ways people have adapted to help them survive these natural disasters.
Have a lovely bank holiday weekend.
