On Monday, Classes 2 and 3 visited Dallowgill Moor for the annual Let’s Learn Moor day. It turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year but we were very excited to visit the moors and learn about the uplands.
We began our day learning about fire prevention on the moors. We got to experience using some of the equipment used to fight fires and see how these can be effective in putting out fires on the moors.
Our second activity taught us about the wildlife on the moors. We were shown how traps are used to control the predators which can harm the nesting birds and how managing the plant life can help to support the ground nesting birds to survive. We also completed a quiz to test our knowledge.
The third activity involved a sheep sheering demonstration and we heard about farming on the moors. Some of use were already very knowledgeable and we asked lots of questions to find out more.
Our fourth activity involved water. We learned about how different materials are used to help keep the water on the moors and slow the run off into the valleys. We used stop watches to time water running down different tubes – one clear, one with moss and one with dams made from straw, twigs and hessian. We found the one with the dams helped to hold the water.
After a break for lunch, we met the highland rescue who showed us some equipment they use to help people in trouble on the moors. We enjoyed rescuing Mrs Lewis who had injured her leg and dragging her to safety!
Our final activity of the day involved Owl pellets. We had to find out what the owls had been eating by dissecting their pellets and seeing what bones we could find – we were good investigators and found lots of different parts of the skeleton of small mammals.
We had a great day out and look forward to participating again in the future!
