On Friday 20th, we went on our trip to the Gurdwara, in Leeds. The children behaved brilliantly, they were respectful of the Sikh religion and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
As part of our visit we were offered Langar, those children who wanted to try some did and they really enjoyed it. We were also asked if we would like to try degh parshad, so many of the children have asked me for the recipe for this.
Ingredients- equal parts whole wheat flour, butter, sugar and water.
Method-
First, cook the flour and butter together until it turns golden brown.
Then, mix the sugar and water together.
Add the sugar mixture and simmer, until the mixture thickens and the butter separates.
During the visit we also learnt about the 5 Ks and what their meaning is. We talked about the 3 key principles of Sikhism; meditation, sharing and living an honest life. Sikhs believe all people are equal no matter their status, religion or situation and this is reflected throughout the Gurdwara.
The children were fantastic, so respectful and asked lots of insightful questions. The trip was enjoyed by everyone and we really got to understand more about Sikhism.
Earlier in the week, we spent our maths session looking at one of the White Rose Maths projects, this focused on holidays. First, the children read information from different graphs about the climates in different countries and where would make a good holiday destination for different people based on their requirement. The children then chose their own destination and plotted the temperature and rainfall over the year.
Next the children looked at prices of holidays and explored flying from different airports, so they had to include petrol and parking costs. The last step this week was looking at board basis and working out whether it was better to go self catering, half board or all inclusive.
Have a great weekend in the sunshine, see you next week.
