This week in Class 2…

This week in science we have continued our science unit on states of matter. We looked at how materials can change their state through melting and freezing. We conducted an experiment to observe and compare ice and chocolate. We first selected different techniques which we thought might help speed up the melting process. Once we had decided on how we would attempt to melt the materials, we tested our theories. We used the same method for both the ice and chocolate to try and make it a fair test.

We used heat from our hands, warm water, cold water and salt to see which would help the materials to change state.

Here are some of our findings:

Salt worked a little on the ice but not on the chocolate.

Ice melted faster than the chocolate

Warm water melted both the ice and the chocolate.

Holding in our hands made both materials melt.

We found that the ice melted quicker than the chocolate meaning that it had a lower melting point than the chocolate.

Following our experiment, we used the computers to research the temperature at which different materials melt.

In maths, we are working on fractions. We began by learning about fractions being equal parts and looked at denominators. Then we focused on unit fractions and compared and ordered them. We learned that the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction. Finally, we explored non unit fractions and how fractions can be recorded in different ways.
