We’ve had a special learning afternoon to launch our World Faith of the Year focus: Islam.

The children joined together for an assembly, where we explored the fact that Islam is a worldwide religion followed by 2.4 billion people all across the world. We talked about how people may practise their faith in different ways and considered the importance of learning about beliefs and traditions that may be different from our own.

After the assembly, the children continued their learning in class. They explored a range of images linked to Islamic beliefs, buildings, symbols and Muslim followers. This gave them the opportunity to look closely, share their ideas and discuss what they noticed.

We explored both similarities and differences between Islam and other faiths and traditions. The children were encouraged to ask questions about Islam, including questions that we didn’t know the answer to. This helped us to understand that learning about a faith is an ongoing process and that it’s important to be respectful, curious and open-minded.

It was a thoughtful afternoon, with lots of discussion and opportunities for the children to build their understanding of Islam as we begin our World Faith of the Year focus.
