Curriculum Overview:

Academic Year 2026–27

Explore what each year group will be learning across the three terms of the academic year.

Autumn Term 2026

Nursery & Reception

• Theme: Who am I?

• History: Exploring images of familiar situations in the past.

• Science: Exploring the natural world around them and understanding the effect of the changing seasons around them.

• Art: Using and refining artistic effects to express their ideas and feelings.

• Design & Technology (DT): Weaving using a large scale ‘loom’ and thick ‘threads’.

• PE: Fundamental ball and movement skills.

Year 1 & 2

• History: Changes within living memory – how homes have changed over the last century

• Geography: Location knowledge – continents, oceans and the United Kingdom.

• Science: Everyday materials.

• Art Week: Artists – painting (Black History Month).

• DT Week: Self portrait square (felt shape) sewn onto a contrasting background.

• PE: Multi-skills, throwing and catching and invasion games.

Year 3 & 4

• History: Changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.

• Geography: Location knowledge – counties and cities in the UK, geographical regions, topographical features and human and physical characteristics.

• Science: States of matter.

• Art Week: Artists – painting (Black History Month).

• DT Week: A functional pouch of phone sleeve using embroidery.

• PE: Invasion games, netball, gymnastics and rugby.

Year 5 & 6

• History: The Roman Empire and its impact on Britain.

• Geography: Location knowledge – counties and cities in the UK, geographical regions, topographical features and human and physical characteristics.

• Science: Light.

• Art Week: Artists – painting (Black History Month).

• DT Week: A complex ‘log cabin’ or ‘improv’ quilt block using recycled clothing.

• PE: Swimming, football, netball, dodgeball.

Spring Term 2027 

Nursery & Reception

• Theme:  What is the same and what is different?

• Geography: Exploring different environments and comparing similarities and differences between life in this country compared to life in other countries.

• Science: Changing seasons and what you see, hear and feel whilst outside. 

• Art: Explore, use and refine a variety of artistic effects to express ideas and feelings through sharing ideas, resources and skills.

• DT: Designing and assembling a sweet bite sized treat that can be shared with a friend during an Eid celebration party.

• PE: Gymnastics (strength, balance, coordination) and moving energetically to music through the medium of dance.

Year 1 & 2

• Geography: Local fieldwork focus – recognising landmarks, devising a simple map and developing fieldwork skills including compass directions.

• Science: Animals, including humans. Plants.

• Art Week: Local artists – drawing and mark making.

• DT Week: Designing and preparing a vibrant, refreshing spiced fruit salad for an Eid family gathering.

• PE: Gymnastics, dance, net/wall games.

Year 3 & 4

• Geography: Understanding similarities and differences between places in Europe and the Americas.

• Science: Rock and forces. Magnets.

• Art Week: Local artists – drawing and mark making.

• DT Week: Designing and cooking a traditional warm milk pudding, adapting the spice and dried-fruit ratios to suit a targeted consumer.

• PE: Yoga, rugby, outdoor adventure activities and netball.

Year 5 & 6

• Geography: How people of the Scottish Highlands, the Amazon Rainforest and the Peloponnese region of Greece adapt so they can live and thrive in these environments.

• Science: Living things and their habitats. Forces.

• Art Week: Local artists – drawing and mark making.

• DT Week: Designing, baking and packaging a batch of structurally sound, intricately pattern-moulded Eid shortbread cookies.

• PE: Gymnastics, badminton, tchoukball and outdoor adventure activities.

Summer Term 2027 

Nursery & Reception

• Theme: How do we explore?

• History: Comparing characters from stories and historical figures. 

• Science: Observing seasonal change in the natural world around them.

• Art: Using a variety of artistic effects to express their ideas and feelings.

• DT: Creating simple house structures to compare.

• PE: Striking & fielding skills, athletic movements.

Year 1 & 2

• History: Remembering Francis Drake and Neil Armstrong – how and why their explorations differed.

• Geography: Weather patterns in the UK and around the world. 

• Science: Living things and their habitats – food chains.

• Art Week: 3D collage and making (Winter Olympics)

• DT Week: Designing and making a small-scale boat that can float whilst carrying a ‘treasure'.

• PE: Striking & fielding games, athletic movements.

Year 3 & 4

• History: Understanding where and when the earliest civilizations emerged, the achievements of ancient Egypt and what they led to.

• Geography: Understanding the challenges facing our polar regions.

• Science: Light

• Art Week: 3D collage and making (Winter Olympics)

• DT Week: Constructing a functional 3D frame structure of a Shaduf that can lift a small bucket of water using a lever and a counterweight.

• PE: Athletics – field and track, cricket, net and wall games.

Year 5 & 6

• History: How life changed in Britain during the Saxon settlement. How the Viking invasion impacted Britain.

• Geography:  Understanding what happens when the Earth moves – volcanoes and earthquakes.

• Science: Animals including humans – how the human body keeps us alive and healthy.

• Art Week: 3D collage and making (Winter Olympics).

• DT Week: Crating a Viking long boat.

• PE: Cricket, athletics – field and track and rounders.
