Class 4 - Friday 12th June

07 Jun 2020

Good Morning Class 4

Happy Friday everyone! laughlaugh Only today and then it's the weekend! smiley

I chose this gif today as Will loves the film 'secret life of pets' and it's his 3rd birthday tomorrow! smiley He particularly loves the sausage dog as my sister has one that looks exactly the same called Ralph!

A joke as it is Friday...

'What did one toilet say to the other toilet?'

Scroll to the bottom of the page for the (very funny!) answer. laugh

Here are the answers to yesterday's grammar activities:

-Year 5 grammar 8 answers.docx-

-Year 6 grammar 8 answers.docx-

These are your tasks for today. Remember, you can do the tasks in any order, and you don't have to do everything if you don't have time.

PE:

Have a look at the below link. There are lots of ideas for different PE type activities that you could do at home; give one a go!

Reading task:

No change here, your reading task is to read for 30 minutes. Remember, when you complete a book, you can still do your AR quiz as you normally would at school. Follow the link below:

If you have run out of books to read then visit the enrichment page on our website and read the 'what can I read next?' article.

Maths task:

I have set you an activity for today. Year 5s yours is about coordinates, and Year 6s yours is about constructing triangles.  Remember to go through the lesson before you do the questions. If you find it difficult, you can go back to the lesson and have another go at the questions. I will be checking how you're getting on as the day goes on.

Spelling task:

Please can you choose 5 words at random from the appropriate spelling list below. Please choose words that you haven't used before, and that you can't already spell! I would like you to find out the meaning of your 5 words so that you fully understand them, and then I would like you to write a short tale or story that includes these 5 words. You need to use them in the correct context so that your tale makes sense.

Please underline the 5 spellings (or write them in a different colour) and you could draw me a picture that links to the tale/story if you would like to. You can handwrite this, or you can type it up.

Writing task:

For your writing task for today, I would like you to research deforestation. I would like you to gain a good understanding of what it is, if you haven't already, and the impact it has. When you feel confident, I would like you to write me a text which explains your thoughts and feelings about deforestation.

You can type this up or handwrite it, and it would be great if you could send it to me when you've done it, either through the class email or Purple Mash email

Being kind...

I am leaving this on here as a reminder so that you don't forget to always make the effort to be kind. This could be done in a variety of ways, it could be: some kind words when they are needed; a drink or snack made for someone; tidying up; dishwasher emptying; a message to someone who might be feeling down; a hug (to someone in your household); or something else, whatever it is, it will be worth it to make someone else smile!

Learning project:

The focus for this week's project is 'rainforests'.

The projects this week aim to provide opportunities for you to learn more about the world's rainforests. Learning may focus on the plants, animals and insects that inhabit the rainforest, food that originates there and weather patterns. It could look at plants and animals that can be found in the garden too.

This afternoon, you can either finish the project your started yesterday or start a new one.smiley

Deforestation: Destroying Animal Habitats and The Homes of Humans- Deforestation occurs in rainforests throughout the world. Trees are cut down on a huge scale, often to create space for grazing livestock or buildings. As part of this process, animal habitats and the homes of native people are often destroyed. Can you create a poster highlighting the impact of deforestation on both humans and animals. Can you think of possible solutions to some of these challenges and include these solutions on your posters.

 ● Welcome to The Jungle: Let Creativity Roar!- Henri Rousseau was a French painter from the 19th Century who created many paintings inspired by jungles and rainforests, although he never actually visited one. Can you explore facts about this famous painter and create a jungle/rainforest piece of artwork in his style. You could draw, paint or create a collage, depending on the resources you have available at home.

 ● Discovering Far off Lands-
In the 16th century, Sir Walter Raleigh sailed the Atlantic Ocean in search of a place called El Dorado. His expedition took him to Guyana and his search led him to discover the country’s rainforest. 400 years on, a group of children have taken on the challenge to follow in Sir Walter’s footsteps in their own expedition to Guyana. You should watch the below clip and explore the others on the BBC Teach website. Can you plan your own expedition and consider what you would need to take with you. Alternatively, you could write a first-hand account of your time in the rainforest from the perspective of Sir Walter. Remember that Sir Walter would not have had access to the mod cons we do now.

 ● Rumble in The Jungle - Get that Heart Rate Going! - Can you increase your heart rate by challenging yourself and members of the family to mimic the actions of animals which inhabit rainforests. Actions could include: jumping over logs, ducking under branches, high knees through quicksand, running from a tiger etc. Can you record your heart rate (beats per minute) after each activity. Which activity increased your heart rate most?

 ● Deforestation: Our Climate and Our Planet- As well as impacting on animal habitats and native people, deforestation is also a major contributor towards climate change. Can you create an awareness leaflet about the effects of climate change on our planet and how deforestation is contributing towards this.

Have a wonderful day, and a great weekend! We will be eating lots of cake and playing with lots of paw patrol toys!!

Sending lots of love,
Mrs Barker smileyx
