Animals and their Habitats

10 Nov 2021

In our science work about animals, we have focussed on two scientific enquiries:  Classifying and Researching
We continued with our investigations into how we can group animals. We have explored lots of different ways of grouping animals and thought about questions such as:
'Can they swim?'             'Can they fly?'             Which habitat do they live in?'        'What kind of food do they eat?'

We explored books and the internet to find out more about grouping animals. We learnt that classifying means putting things into groups that have the same features. We found out that animals on our planet are classified into these groups:
Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and minibeasts.
On Tuesday, we worked in teams to find more information about the features of animals in some of the groups. Year Two used books and the internet to find information about mammals, amphibians, and birds. They used their reading and writing skills to create fact files about their chosen animal group.

We learnt that researching is one of our five scientific learning enquiries. We know that that we can research to find information using books, the internet and from experts, such as our visitor from Live Science.  We have some Science Superheroes to help us to remember the names of the five scientific enquiries. This will help us with our science learning as we move through school, as all the classes use the same Science Superheroes:

With Miss Thewsey we have been looking at habitats. The children have really enjoyed talking about the different habitats from the ocean to the desert to the arctic. The children sorted the animals, matching them to where they live. We then had a discussion on how each animal suited its habitat. The children were very enthusiastic and are really enjoying this new topic. The children have been researching animals, finding out facts and investigating where they live.

Within our habitat topic, we have looked at microhabitats. We found out that the word 'micro' means small so the children then thought about the minibeasts that lived there. We went on a walk of the school grounds to observe some microhabitats, the children carefully lifted stone and leaves to look for the minibeasts. They were very careful, making sure they put everything back so we did not distrub any of the minibeasts!

On Friday, the children began making different habitats, considering what an animal needs to surive and how this habitat is suited to the animals and plants that live there. The children had lots of fun, painting, cutting and glueing to make deserts, rivers, mountains, oceans and many more of the habitats we have been learning about.

In English, we have been enjoying our new story called Meerkat Mail. The children have loved reading this story, especially the postcards Sunny sends home from his adventures. The children have been doing some excellent writing using the story as a stimulus. We have written a new blurb for the book, identified the key features of the story and described some of the illustrations.

In Phonics, we have been learning about alternative graphemes.

Please keep practising these at home.

Super investigating this week!  Well done everyone.

Have a lovely weekend.
