Science Launch

04 Nov 2021

Despite only being in school four days this week, Class 2 have been very busy. We have really enjoyed our first week back, jumping straight back into our learning.

We began the week by sharing news about what we had all been doing during the half-term holiday. We focussed on our speaking and listening skills by trying to speak clearly and everyone showed respect by listening carefully to others.

Our new learning focus is science. On Tuesday, we began our work about habitats and animals. We thought about all the animals that we know about and realised that there are a LOT of animals in the world! We considered how we could group the animals and our first idea was that we could put animals into groups, depending on the type of food they eat. We used knowledge that we learnt in our history work about dinosaurs. We remembered that dinosaurs can be classified into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.  We applied this information to classify some animals in our grouping activity. We also had other ideas about how to group animals, depending on the things they can do and where they live. We’re looking forward to continuing with this enquiry next week.
The highlight of the week was our Habitats Launch Day on Wednesday. We had a very exciting time, looking at all the animals that ‘Live Science’ brought to share with us.  We met Oscar, the snake, Gary, the African snail, Stephano, the frog, Max, the Guinea Pig, Izzy, the spider and Sid, the hamster.

The children had the opportunity to hold or stroke some of the animals and  learnt lots about each one as well. Some of our favourite facts were...
the African snail's shell grows with the snail,
Oscar the snake has teeth that come down into his mouth during meal times,
and the frog usually lives in a rainforest, up a tree.
We also spoke about how some animals are warm blooded and others are cold blooded.

Class 2 are very excited to start this new topic and have had an excellent start to their learning.

We have begun looking at a new story in English called Meerkat Mail which the children have enjoyed. They particularly like the party the Meerkats had at the end of the book because Sunny had come home. They looked at the key ideas from the story, identifying the main character, where he went and what he was doing. Then the children wrote some lovely sentences about the story.

The children have also enjoyed making pictures during time in the provision for our science topic. They have been very busy making fish, jaguars, monkeys, crocodiles, spiders and many more animals. We are looking forward to learning all about them in the coming weeks.

The children sharing next week are Seb, Isaac S, Scott, Lexi and Xander.

Also, a reminder that Homework Books will now be collected in on each Monday, instead of Friday. We will return them home to you on Tuesday.

Thank you for all of your hard work this week.

Have a lovely weekend!
