Off into Space!

02 Jul 2021

 3,2,1…Blast Off!

This week, we were excited to do some more exploring.  We set off on our theme work about the life of Neil Armstrong.  This is the second part of this term’s history topic ‘To investigate and compare the lives of significant people.’   Last week, in our final lesson about Captain Cook, we decided that we wanted to find out about being an astronomer.  We know that Captain Cook used the stars to help him to navigate the journey on his voyages. We decided that we wanted to find out about some of the constellations that are used to map out the stars.  We found out that the stars make patterns that look like objects.   Some of us enjoyed playing a game about constellations:

Having researched about the explorer Captain James Cook and his explorations around our planet, we decided that we would like to investigate a person who explored places outside of the planet.

We found out that Neil Armstrong lived 300 later than Captain Cook and that he was the first man to step onto the Moon:

We learnt that writing about a person’s life is called a ‘biography’.  We wrote biographies about Neil Armstrong:

We learnt that the astronauts took samples of rock from the surface of the Moon for scientists to investigate.  We used our sandpit to pretend to collect the samples of rock.
