Our Curriculum

The curriculum we provide at Fountains aims to be broad and balanced.

We continually seek to improve the outcomes for our pupils and we believe that a relevant, modern curriculum, high quality teaching and guidance and support together can achieve this. Our core aim is to create successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.

A new curriculum was introduced in September 2014. Details of the statutory curriculum can be found at: http://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum

Our curriculum is largely planned around themes although some work such as English and maths may be sometimes organised as separate subjects. Sometimes the theme planned is predominantly scientific, at other times history or geography will be the major focus of the theme. Over the whole academic year a balance is achieved. In order to be successful learners we look carefully at the areas of learning we are including in any theme we may be planning.

We recognise that it is essential for our children to be fluent in english, maths, science and computing. We need to provide opportunities for our children to develop their learning and thinking skills and to make sure their personal development is continually progressing.  The richness of learning comes not just from learning different things but learning in many different ways: out-of-doors, through cross-curricular links or by seeing, hearing and doing.

In order to help our children become responsible citizens, we link our themes to the environment; we look at spiritual and moral issues and we look at either our local community or the wider, global community.

In addition to the music curriculum provided in school, our children get the opportunity to learn a variety of musical instruments, taught by members of the Music Service. Instruments include keyboards, guitar, flute, brass, violin, and recorder. We encourage our musicians to play to the school at the beginning and end of assemblies.

In addition to our PE curriculum, children have the opportunity to attend competitions and after school sports clubs that include badminton, volley ball, athletics, football, rocketball and netball.

We make every effort to ensure children are fully involved in planning at our school and regularly consult their views. Any parent who is able to help in school in any way is warmly welcomed.

If you wish to find out more information about our curriculum please speak to the class teachers, or refer to the termly overviews sent out at the beginning of each term.
